Meet Alexey, my AI Teaching Assistant

How an experiment in teaching digital transformation with an AI teaching assistant of my making may be a glimpse of the future.

It’s 9 a.m. at Solvay’s Executive Master in Management program. The room is filled with professionals from diverse industries, eager to dissect the complex topic of digital transformation. The case for the day? Netflix, a masterclass in reinventing business models.
Here I am as the lecturer and case discussion facilitator, guiding the class discussion. And then there’s the wild card — my guest star of the day, a newly configured AI teaching assistant, ready to chime in whenever called upon.
Digital transformation is notoriously hard to teach. It’s not just about understanding technology; it’s about grasping how to navigate change. My goal was to find out whether I could use an AI assistant to enrich the discussion, deepen insights, and engage this experienced cohort in a fresh way. The scope was limited to discussing one facet of digital mindset which involves caring for the health of an ecosystem and for all stakeholders as one consequence of looking at your business not as a pipeline of activities under your control, but as a network of activities that you control only in part.
As I introduced the AI assistant to the room, you could feel the mix of curiosity and skepticism. Some students leaned forward, intrigued; others exchanged wary glances. This wasn’t going to be a traditional case discussion.

Some stuff worked well, some stuff was more buggy, but all in all this was quite an interesting experiment for me, so I thought I’d give you a glimpse and interview Alexey after class. Hope you enjoy this.
