Business Model Canvas: don't just fill it out, make it truly useful!

People start filling the BMC with what is most visible to them—often internal aspects related to their role. There is a better way though.

Recently, in one of my classes on digital innovation, we had a lively discussion about how to use the Business Model Canvas effectively. This conversation made me realize that understanding the rationale behind different ways of applying the BMC is just as important as knowing how to fill it out. More specifically, it reinforced why a market-anchored, customer-centric approach is the most effective way to ensure strategic alignment and business viability.

Today, we’re diving into the Business Model Canvas – but not just any way of filling it out. We’ll explore an optimized sequence that ensures consistency, avoids contradictions, and makes the financial model truly reflect business needs.

Starting with the customer, understanding the needs of each segment you want to target, structuring the value proposition strategically and pragmatically to cater to the needs of customers and key partners, organizing for effective and efficient value delivery through key resources and activities, and finishing with financial sustainability ensures your model is strong and profitable enough to justify the use of capital in the broadest sense possible (natural, financial, intellectual, social, human, technological capital). There’s an optimal sequence to achieve that and here’s why it works so well:

Customer-Driven: Everything starts with understanding your customer needs first.

Logical Flow: Ensures value proposition, customer relationships, and channels align with customer needs.

Strategic Consistency: Prevents contradictions between key elements.

Business Strength: Reinforces key activities and partnerships.

Financial Realism: Ends with a fully backed financial model that reflects business reality.
